Social Commerce: Time for TikTok!last

As one of the UK's very first TikTok Shop partners, Brickweb has been closely following the growth and development of this social media giant. Though the TikTok platform is relatively new to the scene having been launched globally in 2017, it has become a true giant of social media.

Created by Chinese parent company ByteDance, TikTok is all about short-form videos. The platform certainly didn't invent the genre; sites such as Musical.ly and Vine were already big news. Vine ran into problems with becoming profitable due to extremely limited options for monetisation and because the video format allowed only six seconds of content. After Vine shut down, TikTok acquired Musical.ly and soon began to dominate the market.

In this edition of the Brickweb blog, we're going to be looking at some revealing statistics about TikTok that will show you just how much it could drive the growth of your business.

  • Data from Statista show that there were 1.9 billion active TikTok users at the end of 2024, rising from 1.4 billion in 2021. This equates to a 40% increase of users. If the trend continues, which seems almost certain, there will be around 2.3 billion users by 2029.
  • Statista also revealed that, in terms of active users per month, TikTok is the world's fifth most popular app. Facebook continues to be the most popular with 3 billion active users, followed by YouTube, Instagram and WhatsApp.
  • Despite only taking fifth place by number of users, TikTok is used for longer than any other social media network according to a study by Backlinko. On average, TikTok users spend 95 minutes a day using the app. This is significantly longer than the average time people spend per day on Instagram (62 minutes) or X (30 minutes).
  • Across the world, TikTok was 2024's most downloaded app as per figures from Statista. The app was downloaded more than 825.5 million times, narrowly beating Instagram's total of just under 817 million.
  • TikTok's own Economic Impact Report, compiled in 2024, showed that the platform was delivering positive impacts for SMEs. The owners of these enterprises who were surveyed reported a massive 88% increase in sales after they promoted their products using TikTok.
