Celebrating Saint George's Day!

Saint George is the patron saint of numerous regions, including England, Georgia, and Catalonia. In England, his emblem, the red cross on a white background, became associated with the nation during the reign of King Edward III. The legend symbolises the triumph of good over evil and has been used to inspire courage and faith across cultures .

The legend of Saint George and the Dragon is a renowned tale of heroism and faith, deeply embedded in Christian tradition and European folklore. While Saint George was a real Roman soldier and Christian martyr from Cappadocia (modern-day Turkey), the dragon-slaying narrative is a later addition, popularised in medieval Europe.

According to the most widespread version, a dragon terrorised the city of Silene in Libya. To appease the beast, the townspeople offered daily sacrifices, initially of sheep, and eventually of their own children, selected by lottery. When the king's daughter was chosen, Saint George happened upon the scene. He confronted the dragon, subdued it with the sign of the cross, and slew it after the townspeople agreed to convert to Christianity
