Klarna: A New Way to Pay
The methods and tools people use to pay for goods and services has always been evolving. Ancient civilisations used everything from chocolate to seashells as currency. Gold and other precious metals were popular before actual cash. Cheques were followed by credit and debit cards. In recent years, mobile wallets have become widespread. One of the newest payment methods is Klarna, which allows its users to purchase goods on a buy-now-pay-later basis.
Klarna (or Klarna Bank AB to give it its full name) was the brainchild of Swedish founders Victor Jacobsson, Niklas Adalberth and Sebastian Siemiatkowski. The trio took part in the Annual Entrepreneurship Award at Stockholm's School of Economics with the idea for the new business but, surprisingly, failed to do well in the competition.
Despite this setback, they founded Klarna in 2005. After significant investment from 'angel investor' Jane Walerud, who also arranged for them to meet with programmers who could help them build the new platform using Erlang, a programming language designed by technology giant Ericsson.
Further investment saw Klarna grow rapidly, with the company increasing its revenues by more than 80% in 2010. By 2021, the company was valued at a massive £37.3 billion and handled over £65 billion in online sales.
With a stated mission to 'make paying as simple, safe and above all, smooth as possible', Klarna is now the global leader in its field. The brand boasts 147 million active customers across over 400,000 merchants in 45 countries around the world. Klarna provides a range of payment services including direct payments, pay-after-delivery and buy-now-pay-later installment plans.
